Lincoln's 180 Electoral votes, lost the race for Breckinridge. In spite of losing the Presidential race, he won the race for US Senator, from Kentucky. In March of 1861, he was elected by the Kentucky State Legislature as junior US Senator from Kentucky. After he was expelled as Senator, he enlisted in the Confederate States Army as a brigadier general, advancing to a major general, commanding the 1st Kentucky brigade. After the war ended, Breckinridge feared he would stand trial for treason, and fled to Cuba, then Canada, then the United Kingdom, returning to the US, in 1869, after he was granted amnesty.
