The earth is very geologically active, and there is volcanic activity every day around the world. The Puʻu ʻŌʻō cone of the Kilauea volcano in the U.S. state of Hawai'i has been erupting non-stop since January 3rd, 1983 (over 28 years) and the Stromboli volcano off the coast of Italy has been erupting continuously for all of written human history (scientists estimate at least 20,000 years)

Both volcanoes erupt in a relatively minor fashion: the constant release of energy prevents a build-up and catastrophic explosion (scientists have even named this eruption style as "Strombolian" after the Italian volcano). This has allowed scientists to study each volcano very closely for many years, and has taught mankind a lot about how volcanoes work.
