Copper was known from perhaps 9000 BC. The earliest finds are from the Middle East, and other old discoveries are known from Asia.

Copper is sometimes found in its native (metallic) form, but more commonly as a sulphide, oxide, or carbonate. Copper ores are often attractively coloured, and it only a small step from there to recall the green flames when copper ores are put into a fire.

Cyprus was a well known source in Roman times, and it is from copper that the island got its name.

An important discovery, was that the addition of about 10% of tin gave the alloy bronze, which can be tempered to make useful tools and weapons.
