The CSS Alabama was commissioned on August 24, 1862. It was built by Great Britain and was disguised as a supply ship while in British waters. It became a deadly Southern warship.
Raphael had been with the US Navy for 30 years. He joined the Confederate Navy and as commander of the CSS Sumter, he captured or burned 18 Union ships. He then found himself in Liverpool, England, and commanded the newly acquired CSS Alabama. He made a connection with Confederate merchantmen in the Azores and armed the Alabama. Over the next two years Semmes ran rabid over Union shipping. He captured or burned 65 Union vessels said to be worth almost $7 million. The CSS Alabama was finally sunk by an old Union Navy comrade, Captain John Winslow and his USS Keararge.
With all certainty, the CSS Alabama was the most successful Confederate warship. The ship came into being through the efforts of the Confederate Secretary of War, Mallory. He sent former US Naval officer James D. Bulloch to England to purchase the construction of two light wooden cruisers the CSS Florida and the CSS Alabama. The Alabama was captained by a former US Naval officer, Raphael Semmes. In a two year period, the CSS Alabama sunk 65 Union ships. In 1864, the ship engaged in battle the USS Kearsage, and lost the battle, ending her terror on Union shipping.
The United States Ship Merrimack was converted to the CSS Virginia. The confederates destroyed the boat so that the Yankees could not get to it.
