The airship LZ-129 Hindenburg was built for intercontinental passenger, mail, and freight transportation. Its primary route was between Germany and the United States, with additional flights between Germany and South America.
At the time Hindenburg was designed, there were no fixed-wing airplanes capable of flying passengers and mail between Europe and America on a regular basis.
Hindenburg's first flight was in March, 1936, and the ship was destroyed by fire at Lakehurst, New Jersey on May 5, 1937.
