The BK 37 Bordkannon was fitted in an underwing pod with a magazine containing first 6,, then later 12, 37mm rounds.
The Battle of Britain was predominately fought between the British RAF and the German Luftwaffe assisted by the Italian Air Force.Other main weapons in the battle were Chain-Home Radar Network, British Observer Corps and British Anti-Aircraft Artillary. The RAFThe two mainstay fighters for the RAF wereHawker Hurricane - Mk1Supermarine Spitfire - Mk1 and Mk2.Also used by the RAF were.Bristol Blenheim - Mk1f. On August 10 1940 the Germans had 875 high level bombers (Heinkel 111, Dornier 17 & Junkers Ju 88s) 316 dive bombers (Ju87 Stuka) & 929 fighters, mostly Messerschmitt Bf109s, of which 227 were Me 110s. The Stukas were soon withdrawn, because they were too slow against RAF fighters, to be used in the invasion, which as time would tell be in the East rather than against Britain.
Germany did complete one aircraft carrier; the Graf Zepplin. But Germany lacked the expertise to build a "carrier plane" to operate from it. The Graf Zeppelin was never completed because Admiral Raeder was replaced by Admiral Donitz who wanted only submarines. If Raeder had not been replaced, the Graf Zeppelin would have used carrier-modified Me109 fighters and Ju87 dive bombers. After the war, the submarine was still the nemesis of the only German aircraft carrier. Instead of finishing the ship for their navy, the Soviet Union used it only to transport captured submarine hulls to Russia so they could be copied.
The most successful fighters used by the Luftwaffe were the Messerschmitt (Me)-109 and the Focke-Wulf (Fw)-109. Naturally, there were many others, but these two could have changed the tide of the war had the Luftwaffe not run low on ammo and fuel nearing the end of their struggle. The current highest-scoring ace in history was Erich Hartmann with 352 kills in the Me-109G6 as his standard bird running on a Daimler-Benz (today Mercedes-Benz) engine. (Painted with a black nose, giving him the nickname "The Black Devil" though he was renowned for his personal codes of honor in the air)
Airplanes fell into a number of catagories based on their function. Fighters Aircraft that were tasked with destroying the enemies aircraft. Later in the war the widespread addition of bombracks expanded their roles and they became fighter-bombers. Examples P51, P47, Me109, Spitfire... Dive Bombers Very popular before the war they were supposed to provide precision tactical bombing. Later replaced by multi-role aircraft.Examples JU87 and U.S. SBD. Tactical Bombers Early in war their were dedicated light bombers. Later most fighter aircraft were set up to do the job. Although the Germans and Russians both developed highly specialised variants of their dive and level bombers that worked in a tank busting role. Medium Bombers Usually two engined bombers that provided heavy tactical support to front line armies. Examples B25, B26, HE111. Heavy Bombers Usually 4 engine bombers whose main mission was to obliterate the enemies infrastructure. Examples Lancaster, B17, B24, B29. Transport Military cargo and civilian transport planes fell into this category. Recon Small single engine spotter planes and two engined high speed Mosquitoes and P-38's were seme of the planes that fulfilled this mission. Early in the war planes were differentiated by narrow roles, torpedo bombers, dive bombers, level bombers etc... Later in the war multi-role aircraft were developed. The Avenger was an aircraft developed for the US Navy that eventually took over the roles of dive, level and torpedo bombing.
