When German invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, many believe it to be the beginning of the war. When in actually on March 7, 1936 Germany marched into the "Rhineland". Why this is important is; according to the Treaty of Versailles, this strip of land inside of Germany which bordered France, Belgium and the Netherlands, was to be de-militarised. This means Germany couldn't have any troops stationed inside that area and no fortifications could be built. The importance of this act showed Hitler and the Nazi party that the major power's, France, England, Poland, America and others were not going to do anything to force the issue. So Hitler then moved on, at dawn on Saturday, March 12, 1938 German tanks and soldiers marched into Austria taking it over as well. Again England and France did nothing. So the invasion of Poland is called the start of WWII mainly because that is when England and France finally decided to do something about the German's act on Europe.
