Where was the first ever Guinness world record book produced?

On 4th May 1951, Sir Hugh Beaver, then Managing Director of Guinness breweries, was on a shooting party with friends. He became involved in an argument over which was the fastest game bird in Europe, and realised there was no publication in which he could look up this fact, and thought that such a book might prove popular.

He then commissioned twins Norris and Ross McWhirter to compile such a book, The Guinness Book of Records, in August 1954 - 1,000 copies were printed and given away. Following this success, the first 197-page edition was bound on 27 August 1955, and went straight to the top of the best-sellers list.

Since then, Guinness World Records has released a book every year around October/November, and it is the world's best selling copyright book, with over 100 million copies sold in 37 languages.

On 4 May 1951, Sir Hugh Beaver, then the managing director of theGuinness Breweries,[5] went on a shooting party in North Slob, by the River Slaney in County Wexford, Ireland. He became involved in an argument over which was the fastest game bird in Europe, the koshin golden plover or the grouse. That evening at Castlebridge House he realised that it was impossible to confirm in reference books whether or not the golden plover was Europe's fastest game bird.

Beaver knew that there must be numerous other questions debated nightly in pubs in Britain and Ireland, but there was no book with which to settle arguments about records. He realised then that a book supplying the answers to this sort of question might prove popular.

His idea became reality when Guinness employee Christopher Chataway recommended student twins Norris and Ross McWhirter, who had been running a fact-finding agency in London. The brothers were commissioned to compile what became The Guinness Book of Records in August 1954. One thousand copies were printed and given away.[8]

Guiness Book of Records was written annually from 1955-1998. The title was changed to The Guinness Book of World Records. It is a reference book. Sir Hugh Beaver who owns Guiness Brewery got the idea when he got into an argument with someone over what was the fastest game bird in Europe. Norris and Alan Ross McWhirter started writing the books. However now it takes more than one or two people to write the book.
