An assembly of representatives from individual plantations, as well as the governor and barristers, gathered on July 30, 1619, in Jamestown and became the first representative assembly in colonial America.

The first representative assembly in the English colonies was called the Virginia House of Burgesses. Established in 1619 in the Colony of Virginia, it marked the beginning of self-governance in America. The assembly allowed elected representatives to make laws and decisions on behalf of the colonists, setting a precedent for future legislative bodies in other colonies.
