The first television system to be demonstrated and used for broadcasts was developed by John Logie Baird, a Scot who moved to England. It was first demonstrated in 1925 in London. The system was an electro-mechanical one and relied on a spinning disc to reproduce a moving image. His invention was used for public broadcasts in 1929.
In 1928, Philo Farnsworth demonstrated his system, also an electro-mechanical system. Farnsworth was born in Utah, moved to Rigby Idaho and continued development of his television system in Philadelphia. In 1929, Farnsworth developed a fully electronic television system with no moving parts.
It should be acknowledged that both inventors built on previous ideas and inventions. In 1932, the two met in England and exchanged ideas. Despite the great contributions made by each of them, neither ended their lives as wealthy men.
From the early 1930s, television became the domain of big businesses. Further development work was carried out by engineering teams rather than individuals. Baird and Farnsworth are perhaps the last of the individual giants in television.
