The city was originally known as Byzantium. However in the later years of the Roman Empire, the city was renamed Constantinople after the emperor Constantine the Great (or Holy, depending on your reference).

The city is currently named Istanbul and is located on the Levent Peninsula in Turkey.

Originally built as a christian cathedral, it was later converted into a mosque during the Ottoman empire. Until 1528, it was the world's largest cathedral.
