The French had added an armoured band on the sides of the wooden frigate "Gloire" in 1859 and the British launched an armoured warship (the "Warrior") in 1860, but both ships cannot be considered Ironclads, because they were still a compromise with the old conception of a warship, that's to say they kept the old profiles, being provided with the usual masts and rigging.
That being stated, the first real ironclads were "invented " in America, during the Civil War. The CSS "Virginia" gave her first battle on March 8, 1862 and was encountered by the USS "Monitor" the following day.
The first one was projected by Commander John Brooke, skilled and talented sailor and scientist.
The second one, by the talented engineer, inventor and scientist, Captain John Ericsson.
No single person invented the practical ironclad. They evolved through many different inventions and additions over a period of about 100 years.

The first Union ironclad warship for the Union in the US Civil War was the USS Monitor. It was designed by Swedish engineer, John Ericsson. The ship was unique in that it was the first warship to have a revolving turret. This enabled the ship to always be able to aim its cannons on an enemy warship. The USS Monitor was built in 1862 and battled the CSS Virginia at the Battle of Hampton Roads.
USS Merrimack was a frigate and is best known as the hull upon which the ironclad warship, CSS Virginia was constructed during the American Civil War

The battle between the two ironclad warships, USS Monitor (first United States ironclad warship) and CSS Virginia (previously the USS Merrimack and first Confederate States ironclad warship) was significant because it was the first battle in the world where ironclad warships dueled together. The two warships were not the first ironclad warships in the world to be built, but they were the first ironclads to engage in combat against each other.
