The Seven Pines Battle was fought about 10 kilometers eastward of Richmond,

south of the river Chickahominy, where the Confederate Commander general Joseph Johnston decided to attack two Corps of the Army of the Potomac (III and IV Corps) which had been deployed there, with their back to the river, and their left wing covered by a swampy stream, the White Oak Swamp.

The battle started on May 31, 1862 and ended on June 1st with a Confederate gain of ground of about 2-3 kilometers. The casualties were:

Union Army 790 dead, 3,594 wounded an 647 prisoners and missing;

Confederate Army 980 dead, 4,749 wounded (among them Joseph Johnston) and 406 prisoners and missing.
