Charles John Huffam Dickens [February 7, 1812-June 9, 1870] needed money fast, so he wrote A Christmas Carol fast. He finished the book in six weeks, for publication on December 19, 1843. For wife Catherine Thomson Hogarth [May 19, 1816-November 22, 1879] was expecting the couple's fifth child, son Francis Jeffrey Dickens [January 15, 1844-June 11, 1886]. During 1843, the family lived at 9 Osnaburgh Terrace in London, England.

by Charles Dickens as a book. He laid the book out not in chapters as was normal but in staves. "Stave" is an older term for a "verse" or "stanza" of a song (or sometimes of a poem). Dickens choose it as a play on the book's title therfore each section is a "stanza" of the whole "carol".
