Manual machines were designed by Christopher Sholes- but patented by Remington, they came into general business use- not necessarily private writers, by about the latye l860"s after the Civil war. it was claimed the first writer to use a typewriter in general usage was Mark Twain, but as these machines are standardized- the basic asdfjkl; keyboard still used- on computers, they are fungible and it is difficult to establish privity or first use! as they were distributed nation-wide, well you can see the problem. Still Twain is considered to be the first regular writer to use one.
