Many cities sent out colonies when their population exceeded the land capacity of the parent city. There were several hundred. And some of these colonies in turn outgrew the capacity of their land then also sent out colonies.
Some well known ones are Athens (Miletus), Corinth (Corfu), Sparta (Taranto). However some colonies were set up by a consortium of cities anxious to get rid of a surplus and also get rid of potential problem-makers.
