Fairs were located wherever they could attract passers by. This meant on well traveled roads and at towns. The best places were at bridges, where a number of roads would converge. Crossroads were good places. And roads going into major towns and cities were also good.

Fairs

•To a medieval fair came "all manner of men, the mean (poor) and the rich."

•Most villages and towns held weekly markets, where people sold their goods. Fairs, held once or twice a year, gave people the chance to enjoy themselves.

Fair

•Any peasant could take vegetables or cheese to sell at the town market, though he had to pay a tax to stand in the square with his goods spread out on the floor.

•Richer traders set up stalls.

•Some fairs were international markets. Merchants came to the great fair at Stourbridge near Cambridge from as far away as Germany and Italy. Norwich and London also had big fairs.

•A fair might last 3 weeks, filling the town with traders, travellers, pedlars, doctors, fortune- tellers, and entertainers.

•Kings encouraged fairs because they brought in money from abroad.

Entertainment

•Entertainment was part of the fun of the fair. For country villagers, especially children, it was a treat to watch an acrobat or a stilt-walker. But not everyone liked the entertainers. The poet Langland wrote that "if it were not for their dirty jokes, no one would give them so much as a farthing (a small coin worth a quarter of a penny)".

•There were no theatres, but plays were performed in churches or on carts. Medieval plays were religious. The early ones were given by town guilds who performed miracle plays, acting out stories from The Bible and the lives of the saints. In the morality plays of the 1400s, actors staged tales of good versus evil. Everyman (the ordinary person) had to choose between Vice (the Devil) and Virtue (goodness).

Rich and poor people went to the fair to see

minstrels, jugglers,

fire-eaters, sword swallowers,

acrobats, buffoons (clowns), and musicians.

Naughty

Anyone who broke market rules was punished by the market court, meeting in a hut known as the Tolbooth.

Pickpockets and thieves risked a stay in the town gaol.

Fairs were always annual (yearly) events - markets were generally weekly. Both had to be granted by licence from the king and this document specified exactly where the event was to take place, over how many days and who would benefit from the tolls and rents paid by the traders.

What are some of the names for medieval markets?

There were two types of markets in the Middle Ages, permanent and temporary. The temporary markets were called fairs, and were held on the feast days of saints of local churches. There is a link below to a paragraph on medieval fairs. Permanent markets had all sorts of businesses, and a permanent market was one of the things that elevated a village to the status of town. Since townsfolk usually did not cook for themselves, the markets usually had stalls of shops for food, nearly always including bread and other baked goods. Other shorts of shops followed. Even villages had blacksmiths. Towns also had butchers, and craftsmen of various sorts, such as weavers, potters, tailors, and so on. And they sometimes had merchants who brought goods in from outside the town.
