For example, a slave named Jack would be called Tyler's Jack during slavery, and Jack Tyler after freedom. After they were emancipated, most slaves kept the surname of their former owners.

Before Africans were bought to US against their will to serve as slaves, most other groups came looking for freedom or opportunity. Although the Constitution forbade importation of slaves from 1808, smuggling of slaves continued for many years after that time.

The Union army created African American units to fight in the civil war. Before that slaves would join the Union units that came into their area to find freedom from the plantations.
Freedom was a dear gift to slaves but they did not know what to do with it so they tested everything they wanted to do, but freedom came at a price. The Jim Crow Laws made black and white contact almost impossible, for every public place was segregated, ensuring know contact was possible until the 15th amendment said that service areas could be segregated but equal.
