Planes were utilized in air battles in Europe (The most famous axis pilot being the red baron). However, it wasn't American planes that were used by American pilots, rather the pilots used British and French planes, because production of war materials was haphazard at the onset of WWI. Then, after WWI, when America had just started completing a respectable amount of air vehicles (all for naught, I suppose) the planes were converted to be used for air mail, plane circuses, and commercial flight.
