The Japanese paid some reparations as per the Treaty of Peace with Japan however they committed so many horrific and revolting war crimes that no reparations could possibly come close to compensating for them. Also no real prosecutions of the Japanese happened after the war and some Japanese war criminals are still honored as heroes. One even being elected as their prim minister. To this day they refuse to admit to, or apologize for, their heinous crimes or compensate those that survived.

War criminals in Europe and throughout the globe (the ones that survived the war) were tried in the International War Crimes Court, and cases investigated by the International War Crimes Committee. As it turned out, some war criminals escaped harsh treatment and were thrown in jail while more serious cases sometimes resulted in the death penalty.

According to Japanese tabulation , 5,700 Japanese individuals were indicted for Class B and Class C war crimes. Of this number, 984 were initially condemned to death; 475 received life sentences; 2,944 were given more limited prison terms; 1,018 were acquitted; and 279 were never brought to trial or not sentenced. The number of death sentences by country is as follows: the Netherlands 236, Great Britain 223, Australia 153, China 149, US 140, France 26, and Philippines 17. The Soviet Union and Chinese Communist forces also held trials for Japanese war criminals .

Canada has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. Canada's crime rate is much lower than that of the US, especially when it comes to crimes involving violence.
It means that, as stated, the greatest criminals of the world are not those who would murder the defenseless, or commit other crimes; they are those who stand by and do nothing but watch.
