They were still there, the territory just happened to be named as Mandatory Palestine. Prior to independence the Proto-Israeli Jewish community was called the Yishuv.

This question could be asked of any newly formed nation that was previously controlled by an empire, i.e. Where were the US Americans before the United States became independent? -- In the same place, it just happened to be called the Thirteen Colonies. In both cases, the initial populations have been bolstered quite substantially by later Immigration, but this does not change the fact that before independence that the people who declared independence were already in the country-to-be.

Why did Israel create an Arab-Israeli conflict?

Israel's very existence provoked conflict. Israelis did not have to do anything to create the Arab-Israeli Conflict, the Zionist Jews' intent to create a state led to violent confrontations by Arabs throughout the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, before Israel's independence in 1948.

Are the Jewish people of Israel the new Nazis as their treatment of Arabs indicate?

No. It should be obvious that this kind of talk involves fooling around with the word 'Nazi'. It's rather like calling traffic wardens 'petty Hitlers' - and taking it seriously. Since long before the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948 the Palestinians (and many Arabs further afield) have refused to acknowledge Israel's right to exist at all. The Israelis are fighting against fanatical terrorists who deny Israel's right to exist. In the circumstances the conduct of the Israelis has been very moderate indeed. Joncey
