Most Government buildings, local town halls, even pubs (bars) and there were recruitment sites set up in town squares, small town village greens and the like. Because Australia is so big and the population so small, it was deemed easier for the recruiters to go to the people rather than the other way around. Many of these 'temporary' recruitment ponits were staffed by officials with little training and with a 'blind eye' to the age of the applicants The same thing occured in ther Boer Wars and to a lesser extent during WWII. Australia sent more troops to WWI than any other country in the Empire per head of population. (not in actual numbers)
