The two sides in the US Civil War were the North (union) and the South (Confederate). The Confederate States were the southern states south of Kentucky and Maryland and east of the Mississippi river, along with Texas. Their Capitol was in Richmond, Virginia. The Union, or The North, was all the rest of the United States, with its Capitol in Washington, DC, about 100 miles from Richmond.
