Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) believe that the New Jerusalem is not yet built. Zion, the New Jerusalem, is a city that will exist during the Millennial reign of Jesus Christ, after His Second Coming. But yes, they do believe that the New Jerusalem will be built on the American Continent. In fact, one of their 13 Articles of Faith says, "We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American Continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and that the earth will be renewed and receive it's paradisiacal glory." As for why they believe that, their belief is based on Biblical, Book of Mormon, and modern revelations. For example, Ether 13:3-12 in the Book of Mormon discusses the Second Coming, Gathering of Israel, and the New Jerusalem. It specifically says, "a New Jerusalem should be built upon this land", meaning the land of America. Revelations given to Joseph Smith and recorded in the Doctrine and Covenants give further information as to how Zion will be organized and where it will be built.
There were two temples in Jerusalem that were destroyed. The first was built by King Solomon and the second was built by King Herod.
The Old City of Jerusalem was built out of what is colloquially termed "Jerusalem Stone", which is a combination of pale limestone, dolomite, and dolomitic limestone that are very common in the hills surrounding Jerusalem and can be easily quarried there.
The leader that built the Antonia Fortress in Jerusalem was Herod the Great. The fortress was used as a military barracks.
