The date on a half-eagle gold coin should be on the front of the coin underneath the head (Liberty or the Indian). And on the 1/10 ounce American Gold Eagle, the date is to the right of the personification of Liberty.
The first Indian Head Half Eagle ($5) gold piece was struck in 1908. A coin of this kind dated 1880 would be a Liberty Head gold coin. Please check the coin again and post new question. Also look on the back of the coin for any mintmarks.
A Liberty Head or Indian head one dollar gold coin dated 1889 or before has .04837oz of gold. The modern Sacagawea or Presidential dollar coins are brass not gold.
