When the moon is in the same direction of the sun, it is called a new moon. A week after the new moon, when the moon has completed about a quarter of it's turn around Earth, this is called the first quarter and about three weeks after the new moon and a week after the full moon, it is called the last quarter.
If you visualise the moon turning around the Earth and imagine that the direction of which the sun is shining is called the "front' of the Earth, the the quarter moon would be at the 'sides' of the Earth and the full moon is at the 'back'.
Definitely the SUN. If the sun were where the moon is in relation to the earth, the earth would be consumed by the sun.
When it is directly opposite, it would be a Full Moon. But the Moon spends half of its orbit on the side opposite the Sun, which includes all of the Gibbous phases from First Quarter to Last Quarter.
because the moon is one quarter size of the earth.
The moon is 1/4 the diameter of the Earth
200lb on earth would be precisly 50lb on the moon as the moons gravity is only a quarter of ours
Definitely the SUN. If the sun were where the moon is in relation to the earth, the earth would be consumed by the sun.
Viewed from a point on the earth's orbit but very distant from earth,the lineup would look like this at the time of Full Moon:Sun . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Earth . . Moon
The moon revolves around the earth.
When it is directly opposite, it would be a Full Moon. But the Moon spends half of its orbit on the side opposite the Sun, which includes all of the Gibbous phases from First Quarter to Last Quarter.
That would be Third Quarter.
because the moon is one quarter size of the earth.
The moon is 1/4 the diameter of the Earth
the moon's radius is about one quarter the radius of earth The moon has no atmosphere and the earth does
200lb on earth would be precisly 50lb on the moon as the moons gravity is only a quarter of ours
Formerly than answer was Pluto, whose moon Charon is just over half its diameter. Now that Pluto is technically not a planet, than answer is Earth, whose moon is just over a quarter its diameter.
First Quarter occurs when the moon is at right angles with respect to the Earth and sun. During this phase, the moon has completed one quarter of it's orbit around the Earth and an observer on Earth will see half of the moon illuminated.
Sun always stays in the same position. The moon phases change only in relation to the moon's position as it orbits around the Earth. Full moon is when the moon is furthest away from the sun, or more or less in a line with sun and moon being at the ends and Earth in between.
