If you’re asking how to save, press Start, then press Save. It’ll warn you that you already have a save file and ask you if you want to overwrite it. Press Yes, and the game will save.
If you’re asking where the best places to save are, or what the best times to save are, always save before gym battles. Even if you know you can beat them, ALWAYS SAVE. Save after you beat them too. Save whenever you reach a new city. Save whenever you catch a new Pokémon. Save before and after you battle your rival. Save before and after all boss battles (including legendaries). Save before and after beating every member of the Elite Four…and FOR THE LIFE OF YOU DO NOT FORGET TO SAVE BEFORE BATTLING THE CHAMPION! Otherwise if you lose, you have to restart the entire E4.
There is no best place or time to save, really, and there’s no such thing as saving too often. Save the game as much as you want, wherever you want, and whenever you want. This way you’re sure to never lose progress.
