Television images of the war
There were approximately 250 million people in America in the 1960s. It was very rare for an American household to NOT HAVE a TV...most had rabbit ears antenna, but they were TVs.
During the Vietnam War, many artists protested the war in their art and music. This war was called the television war because it was then that the rest of the world could see what was going on during the war. The songs were anti-war and sang about the soldiers wanting to get out even if the war wasn't won.
Most Americans during that time period (the war years) didn't want to talk about it. They didn't want to use the word Vietnam, War, Army, Bombers, Guns, or killing. It was on television, in the newspapers, in the magazines, on the radio, everyday, every week, every month, year after year. "Most" Americans during the Vietnam era had had enough of killling and violence. They were sick of it!
Robin Williams as a DJ on Armed Forces Radio in Vietnam, "Good morning Vietnam." PBS' David Lamb's book, "Vietnam, Now - A Reporter Returns," has a great deal of information about the inside workings of the press during the Vietnam War. CBS reporter Morley Safer also wrote a book about Vietnam called "Flashbacks - On Returning to Vietnam." Although Safer spends more time talking about his trip than he does recalling the way things were in 1965 when he was in Saigon.
A TV converts electrical energy into light and sound energy. The energy transfer diagram would show the input of electrical energy from the power source, which is then converted into light energy by the screen and sound energy by the speakers. Some energy is lost as heat during the process.
What hurt LBJ was when TV anchorman Walter Cronkite went on nation wide television after he himself had toured South Vietnam and turned against the war on TV. When LBJ saw that on television he reportedly stated, "If I've lost Cronkite I've lost the war (or the American people)." Either way, LBJ was burned out on Vietnam (he wanted to be remembered for his Great Society, not Vietnam), therefore he refused to run for re-election...announcing his refusal on nation wide television.
Si Robertson served in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1970 as a member of the United States Army. He was part of the 25th Infantry Division and experienced significant combat during his time there. His service in Vietnam has been a topic of discussion in his later life, particularly in relation to his role on the reality TV show "Duck Dynasty."
Although MASH was written by a Korean War veteran, and the movie/film series was about the Korean War...it was filmed and shown during the Vietnam War; and all of the sarcasim and sentiment was actually about Vietnam. As was stated by the cast during interviews. In reality, the Korean War medical units mirrored WW2 medical units; being only 5 years apart. Vietnam was nearly, in more than one case, as depicted in the MASH movie (starring Donald Sutherland) and the Television series (Starring Alan Alda).
