milk is part of dairy
wheat,corn,cattle,dairy
The type of feed that can be used to feed cattle is normally not for increasing the quantity of milk, but rather quality. However, good-quality feed high in calcium, phosphorus, energy, protein and other essential nutrients may be able to help increase milk quantity in dairy cattle. Certainly good to excellent-quality feed will increase milk production than poor-quality feed, but feed for dairy cows can only get so high before you reach a certain point where you can't get any higher. At that point you need to rely on your cows and the genetics for milking ability in your cows to produce the maximum amount of milk in your dairy operation as possible. As to the answer to this question, there is no definitive answer since the type of forage species used for dairy feed differ from country to country, state/province to state/province.

There are too many variables at stake here: the age of the growing cattle, what type/breed of cattle (i.e., dairy or beef), the type of feed, etc. But basically there are some rules of thumb regarding protein requirement for growing animals: Cattle that are younger than 6 months of age require a feed with 16 to 18% Crude Protein. Growing cattle around 8 months need around 14% CP, and yearlings require around 12% CP. Fattening steers over 18 months of age require between 10 to 12 % CP.

Whatever hay that grows in your area or in your pastures/hayfields. Shorthorns will eat the same sort of hay that Angus or Simmentals or Limousins will eat, there's no difference in the type of hay to feed in regards to breeds of cattle. As a matter of fact, Shorthorns often will do better on average-quality hay than continentals like Simmental or Limousin will, just like with Angus or Hereford cattle.
