4 September 1939 because New Zealand was one of the first countries to be involved in the global conflict precipitated by Germany's invasion of Poland on 1 Sept. It was a consequence of Britain's defence pact with Poland, and consequent war declaration on the 3 Sept, and many British commonwealth countries were of course directly affected.
Although Canada didn't have the independence from Great Britain as it Demonstrates now, Jean Chretien saying " NO " to the war in Iraq for example it did have independent say, as far as politicians were concerned, Canada's prime minister at the time was Robert Borden and he supported the effort, not necessarily the want of the people but that rarely matters in time of war. However many of the Immigrants of the time were British so it was supported but not by force as per the example of the dates of the declarations of war on Germany because they declared war on Russia, Britain declares war on August 4 1914 and our Governor General declared Canada at war with Germany on August 5 1914.
I think you mean to ask: about August 1914 (at the start of World War One). Check out Wikipedia for details on the causes of that war, however a short and maybe over simplified answer is...Germany attacked France & Belgium on 4 August 1914. Great Britain was partially allied with France, and the British had also promised to protect neutral Belgium. Although Britain was technically not diplomatically obligated to go to war with Germany, it decided to declare war on primarily moral (right vs. wrong; honoring promises, etc.) reasons.

WW2 started out with Britain and France declaring war on Germany in 1939 because Hitler invaded Poland regardless of the agreement between Germany, France and Britain. we didnt get invovled in the war until 1941. the war ended 4 years after we got involved. in a sense, the war was more Britain's war due to the 2 year wait of the US, but we were providing supplies and weapons for Britain and France before we officially stepped in.
