No U.S. President has ever been elected by the people.

The U.S. House of Representatives elected the President in 1800, breaking the electoral vote tie between Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr, and in 1824, from among the three candidates with the most electoral votes since nobody received a majority of the votes. In 1877, Congress created a special commission to determine the recipient(s) of 20 disputed votes from the 1876 election. In so doing, they determined the winner of the election.

In all of the other 55 U.S. Presidential elections to date, the Electoral College determined the winner.

Five U.S. Presidents never won a presidential election. Each served a partial term after his predecessor died or resigned...

  • John Tyler was President from 6 April 1841 until 3 March 1845, after the death of William Henry Harrison.
  • Millard Fillmore was President from 9 July 1850 until 3 March 1853, after the death of Zachary Taylor.
  • Andrew Johnson was President from 15 April 1865 until 3 March 1869, after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.
  • Chester A. Arthur was President from 19 September 1881 until 3 March 1885, after the assassination of James A. Garfield.
  • Gerald R. Ford was President from 9 August 1974 until 20 January 1977, after the resignation of Richard Nixon.

Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Harry Truman, and Lyndon Johnson were vice presidents who became presidents due to the death of the president, but each of them went on to win reelection.
