Roman Catholic AnswerMany Catholic Churches have special privileges: a major Basilica has an altar exclusively for the Pope's use, and by others only he can give permission to. Most have a papal throne. There are minor Basilicas throughout the world, the clergy who serve in them enjoy a title of honor that gives them certain ceremonial rites. Saint Vincent Archabbey Basilica, the church at my monastery is designated a minor Basilica.

Cathedrals are the official church of a Bishop, containing his throne. They are the mother church for the diocese, the date of their consecration is a feast for that diocese.

There are also many indulgences that can only be obtained by visiting a certain Church.

What is concordat?

A concordat is a special term for a treaty between a secular state and the Vatican. It deals with the status of the Roman Catholic Church in the country - for example, the government may pledge itself to collect taxes or tithes for the church. The treaty may also extend to other, more general matters, too. Take a look at Concordat Watch for examples of how the Catholic Church uses and has used concordats to obtain privileges and other benefits from national governments.
