It was founded by Peter Stuyvesant and sold to the British who renamed it to New York. Actually, it was not sold, but traded for Suriname. Some neighborhoods in New York are named after cities in the Netherlands (ex. Brooklyn named after Breukelen; Harlem named after Haarlem)
