The writer of Revelation calls himself John.

He also declares that he is on the island of Patmos. Several of the early church father said John the apostle had been banished to othe island by the Roman Emperor Domitian

Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Tertullian, Hippolytus, Clement of Alexandria, and Origen, all credit the book to John.

More recently a book called the Apocryphon of John (about a.d. 150), was found in Egypt that specifically attributes Revelation to John the brother of James.

There is no certainty as to who wrote the Book of Revelation. It is signed by "John, the servant of God", but we do not know who this John was.

  • Some say he was John the disciple of Jesus.
  • Some say John was also the author of the Gospel according to St John.
However, this gospel was written anonymously and we do not really know that author's name, so there is no reason to believe he was called John. In any event, the style and theology of Revelation and of John's Gospel are quite different.
  • Scholars say we do not know who the author of Revelationwas, and simply attribute the book to an otherwise unknown John of Patmos.

Where did Paul write the book of Revelation?

The apostle Paul did not write the book of the Revelation. The apostle John, one of the original 12 disciples, wrote this book while exiled on the Isle of Patmos.AnswerThe island of Patmos is very close to the church of Ephesus which John pastored and to which he delivered Revelation after he wrote it. CLARIFICATION: there is no evidence that the apostle John wrote the Gospel of John. Why are there two different books of the bible called john?

The apostle John wrote a few books or letters that appear in scripture. John wrote the Gospel of John. John also wrote the letters 1st John, 2nd. John and 3rd. John. John is believed to have written the book of Revelation as well. There are only two "books" in scripture written by John, and that's the Gospel of John and the "Revelation of Jesus Christ," commonly called "Revelation."
