The best way to carry a weapon when there is no target is the low ready. It keeps the weapon from being pointed at anyone not a target and allows for quick target acquisition if the need arises.
The holster transport is the most common method of carrying the pistol because it can be transported safely in the holster. This transport is used when there is no immediate threat (enemy contact is remote).
Condition 2, does not apply to the M9 Service Pistol.

When contact with the enemy is imminent, you should have- Rifle sights just below eye level Firing hand around the pistol grip. Non-firing hand on the hand guard. Trigger finger straight along the receiver. Buttstock of the rifle in shoulder. Muzzle pointed in the direction of enemy contact.
