Originally, the song was only available as a single, released in March 1971. But subsequently, it was added to the album "Stones," which came out in late 1971. It is worth noting that according to Diamond, the lyrics of this song were inspired by his unsuccessful tryout for a role as controversial comedian Lenny Bruce. Playing Lenny evoked some very intense emotions in Diamond, feelings about not really having a home and about being lost between the very different worlds of the east and west coasts (he had just moved to Los Angeles in 1970, having spent much of his life in New York).
