A:Mark was the first New Testament gospel to be written, and the first New Testament book to talk about the end of the world. Mark chapter 13 has Jesus describe the end of the world and his second coming, on clouds of glory, within the lifetimes of some of those to whom he was speaking. As part of the chiastic structure of Mark, verse 9:1 has Jesus tell the disciples that some of them would not taste death until they saw the kingdom of God coming with power, an introduction to the fuller passage in chapter 13.

By the time Matthew was written (in the eighties of the first century), it was becoming clear that this would not happen, as most of Jesus' generation had already died. For this reason, the author of Matthew altered Mark's passage to say that no one knew when Jesus would return.
