The home of the Temple Owls is Temple university in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The owl has been the symbol and mascot for the university since the 1880's.
Here's a clip from Temple University's home page: "Founded in 1884 by Dr. Russell Conwell as an informal adult-education outgrowth of his Baptist Temple ministry, Temple College was chartered in 1888 and was incorporated as Temple University in 1907." [The rest of the story is that Rev. Conwell was pastor of Grace Baptist Church, which was known as The Baptist Temple. There's interesting background information about The Baptist Temple at http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/Field/5657/baptist.html]
