There were approximately 3,500 slaves in Georgia in 1760. By 1780, there were over 20,000 slaves working on plantations across the state.
After he abandoned his attempt to pursue the Army of Tennessee, he turned South-East from Atlanta and crossed Georgia to Savannah, from where the Confederate General Hardee escaped across the river into South Carolina (saving the fine city of Savannah from a hammering.) Sherman soon followed him into South Carolina, the state that had started the war, and burned down the capital, Columbia. The war ended soon after Sherman crossed into North Carolina.

General sherman.
Major General William Tecumseh Sherman, US Army.
What was sherman's goal in taking his army across Georgia?
A campaign of punitive raids across Georgia that wrecked farms and railroads, destroying civilian morale, and helping to starve the Confederate troops in the field. It shortened the war by months at almost nil casualties. Some historians have called it the first example of Total War, and Sherman has been called the first modern General.
The mountain chain that stretches across North Georgia is called the Blue Ridge Mountains.

He took his Army through Georgia to destroy and annihilate all Georgia's military and civilian infrastructures and conquest Savannah, taking from the rear the Confederate defensive system of the so called "Atlantic Fortress".
