The concept of repression suggests that the human mind can involuntarily push uncomfortable thoughts, memories, or desires into the unconscious to protect the individual from distress. These repressed thoughts can still influence behavior and emotions, even though the individual may not be consciously aware of them. Therapy can help bring these repressed elements into awareness and address them.
