Koalas feed almost exclusively on the leaves of eucalypts and have been seen feeding in only 120 of the 700-800 species of eucalypt found in Australia. Generally, koalas eat from only about 60 of the species, consuming about half a kilogram of eucalyptus leaves every day. Within these 60 species, there are about a dozen of the "preferred" variety.

The Greater Glider also feeds on eucalyptus leaves as its main food, supplemented by nectar-laden blossoms.

Ringtail possums are capable of living almost exclusively on eucalyptus leaves, but they tend not to feed solely on them. Similarly, wombats and Brushtail possum will eat eucalyptus leaves, but prefer other forms of food.

Various insects feed almost exclusively on eucalyptyus leaves. They include:

  • Eucalyptus tortoise beetle and its larvae
  • Eucalyptus snout beetle (or gum tree weevil) and its larvae
