The Server Message Block (SMB) is a network sharing protocol that has an application-layer network protocol used for providing shared access to any file, printer, fax, and other computer miscellaneous. SMB also allows updating files on the remote server.

the main reason behind that is we can control sharing resources in domain,and as well as as we can use more no.of systems than in workgroup,and we can provide user permissinons in domain.
A workgroup has more security. A homegroup provides less security than a workgroup because any user of any computer in the homegroup can access homegroup resources.

Check the firewall settings. ping.exe uses a very specific port to accomplish what is made for. In order to see a computer in workgroup the option files and printers sharing has to be on (137, 139 ports).

In order to share a printer in a workgroup in a Windows based setting, you would need to install Client for Microsoft Networks. You would also need the File and Print Sharing component.
