A river profile includes being steeper near the source, where there is a lot more material for the river to cut through before reaching the base level. As the water goes further down the river, the river begins to cut laterally.

The cross profile of a river(sometimes called a cross-section) shows how the river looks at certain points (like the upper stage or middle stage etc). The cross profile of the upper course of a river looks like a V shape. It can help you see if erosion or deposition is occurring in the part of the river you are looking at.

The long profile of a river is general information about it like for e.g. middle course, length, altitude, end course etc. you also get information on the gradient.

the upper (youthful) section [close to the source], the middle (mature) section [in the middle of the river], and the lower (senile) section [closer to the mouth of the river.
