That would be Instrumental Music. Many bands and genres are instrumental, such as classical and some jazz music, along with bands such as Liquid Tension Experiment or Mono, which are Progressive Rock. Many Progressive Rock bands are instrumental, if you are looking for a rock band that has no vocals.
Progressive rock style kind of evolved through these bands trying it first: The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Byrds, The Who.
Whew that's a tough one! It's tough to say because there was a time where prog rock bands ruled the rock world - for instance, when Yes released the monolothic "Tales from Topographic Oceans", a double album conatining four ~20-minute songs, not only did it sell well, it debuted at #1 on the US Billboard charts! That's the opposite of underrated, really. If we're looking at today's prog rock bands, well, it depends. There's bands like Dream Theater that are essentially prog-metal and have a sizable following from fans of both genres. But then there's bands like the Flower Kings and the Dixie Dregs that have a loyal fanbase, but do not get a lot of recognition. Which IMO is a shame because there's a lot of great music out there that's getting passed over.
No. I guess they could both be considered progressive rock, but the bands are quite different and are not related to each other.
