it helped them to protect Britain
A number of theories exist as to why Britiain chose Botany Bay to settle: 1) Britain's prisons were full and so they decided to settle in order to be able to send convicts there. This theory is questionable as other already established colonies closer to home were available to do this. The expense at sending convicts half way round the world was huge. 2) Britain wanted to expand its growing empire. 3) Britain wanted to increase its naval influence in the region to protect its intersts in India. It saw Australia with its abundant flax, that was needed in ship making, as an ideal naval base.
The alliances helped cause world war 1 because when Franz Ferdinand the Archduke of Austria-Hungary was assassinated along with his wife it caused Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia. This was what set off the alliances and all hell broke loose. Russia immediately jumped in to protect Serbia who they had an alliance with. Then Germany came in to protect Austria-Hungary and declared war first on Serbia but also on Russia and France. But to get to France it would need to go through Belgium and France and Britain declared war on Germany. The alliances were called the triple alliance and the triple entente. The triple alliance consisted of Germany, Austria and Italy. The triple entente included Britain, France and Russia.

For a variety of reasons but they can be categorised mainly into Economic and Strategic. In terms of economic reasons it is because Britain had lots of shares in the Suez Canal meaning that they wished to protect these. Gladstone (the prime-minister at the time) even had shares in the canal himself. In terms of strategic the Suez Canal was a really useful trade route to India am so Britain was keen to protect it. Also at one point Russia was trying to take control over Constantinople (which could have prevented the use of the Suez Canal for Britain) do they felt pressured to take control of it. There was also a (egyptian) nationalist uprising led by Pasha Arabi and Britain felt that he may attack the Suez Canal. I hope this helps, sorry I couldn't be more detailed but this is fom memory.
the purpose of the strategic defense initiative was to use ground and space based systems to protect the United States from nuclear ballistic missiles.
