∙ 10y agoHistorically, the U.S. was most severely impacted in its large cities. HIV/AIDS was discovered in 1981, and was originally thought to only affect gay men because the first Americans to become ill and succumb to its effects were all gay men. New York and San Francisco were hit hard, their gay communities nearly devastated. Other U.S. cities began to see their seemingly healthy young men waste away and die. Cities across the South, such as Miami, Houston, New Orleans, L.A., and San Diego, saw their populations of persons with AIDS grow rapidly, as those with no one and no place to go went south to die. The Reagan Administration did not even acknowledge the existence of the virus until 1987, hence, no federal funding was available to research treatment, to research a cure, or to aid those who were suffering. The gay communities in these medium and large cities were forced to devise and fund ways to take care of their own. And they became stronger. Today, the cities most severely affected by HIV/AIDS in the beginning, now have the strongest, most extensive support systems for HIV-positive persons, with some having expanded to include persons with cancer and senior citizens.
TODAY, HIV/AIDS impacts all 50 states, but its effects appear most severe in the rural areas of the northern plains states and the South where persons with HIV are routinely put on waiting lists to receive medicines that can save their lives. These are the same areas with limited HIV/AIDS resources, and HIV-phobic mentalities still can and do lead to murders and suicides, due to disinformation.
