Vicksburg
Ulysses S. Grant
West Virginia was formed from fifty counties in Virginia that refused to secede from the United States. Virginia seceded, but West Virginia became a new state and joined the Union.
Sounds like Shiloh. The Confederates did make a surprise attack. But it was the Union that won.

The Union's main strategies in the west during the US Civil War were to gain control of the Mississippi River and to cut off the Confederate states in the west from the rest of the Confederacy. This involved capturing key cities like New Orleans and Vicksburg, which would allow the Union to control transportation and trade along the river. Additionally, the Union aimed to prevent Confederate forces from moving westward and to secure border states like Missouri and Kentucky.

The US Civil War Battle of Cheat Mountain was a Union victory. On September 12, to the 15th, Union forces in the western part of Virginia, routed Rebel assaults. This was yet another stage of the war that would eventually see this area become the Union state of West Virginia.
First big Union victory. It spelt the end of Confederate hopes in the West, and gave new credibility to Grant.
