The Sino-Soviet split. Although both were communist countries, relations between the USSR and the People's Republic of China progressively soured after the unfavorable (for the communists) outcome of the Korean War. There were border clashes, and even the threat of a Soviet nuclear strike. The US, taking advantage of this, was eager to embrace China to pull it further away from the Soviet Union, while China was relieved to have the United States on its side against the Soviets. (Indeed, the United States informed the Soviet Union it would come to the defense of China in the event of a Soviet nuclear attack, which quickly dispelled any notions the latter had of atomic military adventurism.)
