The Gospel of Luke

Both books were written by Luke, a companion of Paul, a Gentile (non-Jew) and a doctor. He was commissioned to write both books by a person called 'Theophilus' to whom both books are addressed, although whether or not Theophilus was an actual person or a general term for a follower of Christ (Theos='God', Philius = 'lover'), is uncertain.

Acts of the Apostles is generally believed to have been written by the same author as Luke's Gospel and the narrative of Acts follows the Gospel fairly seamlessly, with only a short overlap. Some scholars say that the second ascension to heaven, which commences Acts, may have been a later addition to the book.
