Many capital cities in South America have access to a coast. The only city that has no direct access to the ocean is La Paz, Bolivia, which is the third most populous city of the world.

There are a few capitals not on the coast, Brasilia, Asuncion, Santiago, La Paz, Quito and Bogota.
